“Redefining accessibility through considered luxury”

The Comfort Station

The Comfort Station is an inclusive public toilet proposal designed for South Kensington Pedestrian Tunnel, a key route connecting South Kensington Station with the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, and Victoria & Albert Museum, designed for my Interior & Spatial Design year 2 project. Despite the tunnel serving thousands of visitors daily, there are currently no public toilet facilities within the space. The project responds to this gap by creating an accessible, sensory-conscious environment that prioritises dignity, comfort, and wellbeing for all users, particularly those with physical and cognitive disabilities.

Project Development

To develop to this project, I created a series of maps to analyse the wider site area. This enabled me to explore circulation, navigation, roads and surrounding transport links to Kensington Tunnel. Mapping also enabled to investigate data for users of the tunnel. For example, due to the number of neighbouring tourist attractions, many users of the tunnel will be traveling to the Natural History Museum, V&A Museum, and London’s Science Museum. These tourists may include a number children visiting these places on school trips, forcing the importance of a public toilet in the tunnel to become even more essential. Furthermore, the mapping data explored the lack of accessible toilets in the local area, forcing this project to become significantly more important.
